Overview
In 2005, the board of directors of the International Association of Convention and Visitor Bureaus (IACVB), a distinguished trade association with a century-long history, decided to change its name to one more consistent with an updated brand premise.

Recognizing the evolution of travel, tourism, meetings and hospitality, a rapidly changing business environment, and the need to clarify and strengthen the role of its member organizations, IACVB became the Destination Marketing Association International - DMAI. This new business identity positioned DMAI?s members as destination marketing organizations, or DMOs.

In fall of 2006, DMAI's board of directors decided to undertake a comprehensive review of the potential future of destination marketing, with a focus on the expected state of affairs to be faced by its members, the DMOs of the world.

The most recent futures study of the destination marketing (DM) sector, conducted by IACVB in 2000, had provided valuable information on trends and developments in the industry. Considering the rapid rate of change and the reconstruction of the parent industry, an updated strategic view was clearly needed.

In 2007, DMAI engaged the consulting firm of Karl Albrecht International (KAI) to carry out the new futures study. Dr. Karl Albrecht, chairman of KAI and a distinguished expert on enterprise strategy, personally directed and participated in the research process. Don Mizaur, senior consultant with KAI, participated in the research and managed the compilation of the findings. Many others contributed their ideas, advice, and expertise to the study project.
